A useful wardrobe does not need to be a large one. More often, it comes down to a few pieces that work well together and the shoes, bag and jewellery you wear with them. Change the accessories and the same three garments can take you from a Tuesday morning meeting to a Saturday coffee and on to dinner, without starting again.

To show what we mean, we have taken three Whistles pieces that are on the rails with us now — the Tessa casual trousers, the Ella V-neck button-through tee and the slim jersey jacket — and styled them three different ways.

Start with the trousers

The Tessa casual trousers in black (€129,00) are the foundation, and it is worth understanding why. They are cotton-rich with a little stretch, so they hold a clean line without feeling like formal tailoring. The tie waist sits high, the leg is regular through the thigh and the hem finishes at the ankle — which is the length that works with a flat, a low heel and a trainer alike. Sizes 8 to 18.

Black does the grounding in every outfit that follows. If you are building a wardrobe rather than a single outfit, a well-fitting pair of trousers in your base colour is a useful place to start: it gives you something reliable to build around.

Add the Ella tee

The Ella V-neck button-through tee in white (€69,00) is the lighter layer that keeps the whole thing from feeling like a suit. It is 100% cotton, cut with a relaxed fit and a V-neckline, with buttons through the front. Sizes XS to L.

Those buttons are more useful than they first appear. Keep the tee neatly fastened for work, then leave an extra button open at the weekend to soften the neckline and make the outfit feel more relaxed. It is a small change, but one that helps the same tee move easily between the two.

Throw on the jacket

The slim jersey jacket in ivory (€119,00) is what sharpens everything. It is single-breasted and cut from soft cotton jersey, with a neat collar, welt pockets and a waist that is genuinely fitted, so it reads as tailoring while wearing like a cardigan. Sizes 6 to 18.

Black, white and ivory give the combination a clean, versatile foundation. Keeping the clothing palette simple also makes it easy to introduce another colour through shoes, bags or jewellery when you want to change the mood.

Work

Jacket on and worn neatly, tee neatly fastened, trousers left at their natural ankle length. Add a structured bag that holds what you actually carry, a low court heel you can stand in all day, small hoops and one fine chain.

This is the most polished version of the outfit. The fitted waist on the jacket keeps its shape through a long day at a desk, while the overall look is smart enough for a meeting that appears in the diary at short notice.

Weekend and casual

With the same three pieces, only a few details need to change. Push the jacket sleeves up or carry it over your shoulder. Leave an extra button open on the tee and keep the trousers at their natural ankle length. Add trainers or flats, a small crossbody bag, sunglasses and simple hoops.

Relaxing the sleeves and switching the shoes and bag softens the tailoring almost immediately. These are small changes, but together they make the outfit feel easy enough for a Saturday morning.

Evening and formal

Jacket on, hair up and trousers at their natural ankle length. Add a higher pointed heel and compact clutch in burgundy, then layer gold necklaces and choose more visible earrings or bracelets. The richer accent colour and finer heel make the outfit feel distinctly evening, while the three core pieces stay the same.

For evening, the aim is not necessarily to add more, but to make each detail feel sharper. A pointed toe lengthens the leg beneath cropped trousers, the higher heel changes the posture, and the smaller bag removes the bulk of the daytime look. A little more definition in the makeup completes the change without overwhelming the outfit.

Why it works

Three principles are doing the work here, and they apply well beyond these three garments.

  • Keep the core palette simple. Start with a neutral base you enjoy wearing and add lighter pieces that work easily with it. Bring in stronger colour through accessories when you want the outfit to feel different.
  • Balance relaxed and structured pieces. Here, the easy shape of the trousers and tee is given definition by the fitted jacket. You can apply the same principle with other pieces in your wardrobe.
  • Let the accessories do the switching. In all three looks above, the clothes stay the same. Changing the shoes, bag, jewellery and finishing details gives each version its own character.

Light layers also help carry the outfit into autumn. The jersey jacket is fine enough to sit under a trench or longer wool coat without adding too much bulk at the shoulder. On cooler days, a fine layer beneath the jacket can extend the outfit further.
