Why Might a Woman Need a Breast Prosthesis?

Following a mastectomy or breast surgery, some women choose to wear a breast prosthesis. A breast prosthesis is an artificial breast form designed to fit naturally inside a specially designed mastectomy bra.

Women may choose a prosthesis for many reasons, including:

  • Restoring balance and symmetry after surgery
  • Helping clothing fit more comfortably and evenly
  • Supporting posture and reducing strain on the neck or shoulders
  • Regaining confidence in everyday life
  • Feeling comfortable during social occasions, work, exercise, or special events

Every woman’s decision is personal. Some may wear a prosthesis every day, while others may choose one only for certain occasions.

What Is a Mastectomy Bra?

A mastectomy bra is specially designed to hold a breast prosthesis securely and comfortably in place. These bras include discreet pockets inside the cups and are made with softer fabrics, wider straps, and supportive designs to provide comfort after surgery.

A properly fitted mastectomy bra can help women feel secure, supported, and comfortable throughout the day.

What Is a Breast Prosthesis?

A breast prosthesis is a soft, lightweight breast form created to mimic the shape, weight, and movement of a natural breast. Modern prostheses are designed to look and feel natural beneath clothing and are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and skin tones.

There are different types available, including:

  • Soft initial forms for use immediately after surgery
  • Lightweight prostheses for everyday comfort
  • Silicone breast forms that closely resemble natural breast tissue
  • Partial shapers for women who have had lumpectomies or partial surgery

The right option depends on the type of surgery, lifestyle, and personal preference.

After breast cancer surgery, many women experience changes to their body that can affect both comfort and confidence. Finding the right bra and breast prosthesis can make a significant difference — helping clothing fit properly, improving posture, restoring balance, and allowing women to feel more like themselves again.

At Goods in Kilkenny, we understand that every woman’s journey is personal. Our compassionate, expert fitting service is designed to provide comfort, privacy, and reassurance in a relaxed and supportive environment.

When Can Women Be Fitted After Surgery?

The timing of a fitting depends on the type of surgery and individual healing process. In many cases:

  • Soft post-surgery bras may be worn shortly after surgery
  • Temporary soft prostheses are often fitted within the first few weeks
  • Permanent silicone prostheses are usually fitted once healing and swelling have settled, often around 6–8 weeks after surgery, depending on medical advice

Every recovery is different, which is why professional fitting and guidance are so important.
